Commodities' prices retain higher levels despite falling trend on global markets

Most of the commodities refused to budge sharply, particularly the essentials, as markets faced few buyers due to cricket-match hype, sugar which was globally down was locally on the reverse side, during the past week ending on April 2,2011.
On the opening session wheat old and new rose by Rs 25 to Rs 2450 and Rs 2565, and bajra prices rose by Rs 50 to Rs 2600 and Rs 3000, juwar was quoted at Rs 2600. Gur low type conceded Rs 200 to Rs 5500, while the better type was put at Rs 6500. Grams Australia gave away Rs 100 to Rs 4700 and Rs 4900, gram dal Australia lost Rs 100 to RS 5700 and Rs 5900. Irri 6 Sindh shed Rs 10 to Rs 3340, while better quality was unchanged at Rs 3400. Castorseeds Lasbella shed Rs 50 to Rs 1950.
On Jodia Bazaar Kirana items (per 40 kg) white pepper rose by Rs 3000 to Rs 31000, black pepper from Singapore rose by Rs 800 to Rs 18,500, black pepper Ceylon rose by Rs 900 to Rs 18,500, black pepper Brazil rose by Rs 1000 to Rs 20,000, big cardamom conceded Rs 2000 to Rs 83,000, gum fugal up Rs 5000 to Rs 24,000 and long pepper up Rs 500 to Rs 21000.
On Tuesday only wholesale commodity prices were received where rapseeds Nawabshah rose by Rs 100 to Rs 2050 and Rs 2100, rapeseed Dadulane rose by Rs 50 to Rs 1850 and Rs 1900, rapeseeds from Mirpurlane rose by Rs 25 to Rs 2050 and Rs 2075. Cotton cakes with bag low type lost Rs 5 to Rs 1370, while the other type was put at Rs 1400. Wheat showed weakness but traders said exports had affected them, wheat old and new with bardana lost Rs 25 to Rs 2425 and Rs 2440. Gur lost sharply by Rs 200 to Rs 5300 and Rs 6300.
On Wednesday wholesale commodity markets remained inoperative, as government announced half-day holiday due to much hyped Indo-Pak semi-final cricket match. Thus rates were not available, which regular readers would find missing.
On Thursday supplies exceeded demand keeping prices low. Wheat old with bardana shed Rs 50 to Rs 2375, while wheat with new bardana also conceded at the same rate to Rs 2390. Irri 6 Sindh low type was up by Rs 15 to Rs 3340, while the other type was unchanged at Rs 3400. Cottonseed cakes with bag low quality rose by Rs 5 to Rs 1375, while the rest stayed put.
On Friday not a single deal was reported on the wholesales grain and seed market, as main participants were busy in preparations for Juma prayers.
On Jodia Bazaar milk powder moved upward. The changes were: MILK POWDER SKIMMED (Per bag of 25kgs): Irish skimmed was quoted at Rs 8,500 and Haleeb SMP was quoted at Rs 6,500. VEGETABLE: Corolac edged up by Rs 900 to Rs 10,500 and Melco Veg went higher by Rs 300 to Rs 9000. SWEETENED (Per carton): Polac finished up by Rs 350 to Rs 2,850 and Comelle closed higher by Rs 800 to Rs 4,600. PINEAPPLE (Per carton): Polac moved upward by Rs 100 to Rs 1,800.
On Saturday business was seen restricted, as buyers were keeping away from fresh purchasing due to decreasing interest. Wheat old Bardan gained Rs 25 to Rs 2400 and wheat new Bardan picked up the same amount to Rs 2415. Gur prices went up sharply by Rs 200 to Rs 5500-6500. Grams Australia dal fell sharply by Rs 200 to Rs 5500-5700, yellow peas Canada followed the same pattern, losing Rs 50 to Rs 3550-3750 and yellow peas Canada dal also shed the same amount to Rs 3950-4150 and yellow peas Ukraine also shed Rs 25 to Rs 3375-3675, other items maintained overnight levels in process of trading. Only one change was seen on the rice sector, where Irri-6 Sindh was lower by Rs 20 to Rs 3320-3380, other types did not show any change before closing. Cottonseeds oilcake Sindh with bag low type retained overnight level at Rs 1375, while the good type was higher by Rs 20 to Rs 1420.
On Jodia Bazaar chemical items closed mixed. The changes were:.CHEMICAL ITEMS (Per kg): Caustic soda flakes Saudi was quoted at Rs 48, sodium sulphate finished down by 50-paisa to Rs 14, N J Taiwan edged higher by Re 1 to Rs 233 and oxalic acid China moved upward by Re 1 to Rs 68. PETROLEUM JELLY: White Iran was quoted at Rs 45 and caustic Taiwan was quoted at Rs 46.
