PML-N MPA's case: LHC seeks Punjab Assembly speaker's response

The Lahore High Court here Friday directed counsel for Punjab Assembly speaker to seek instructions from him and appear before the court on April 23 in a petition of former PML-N MPA Shumaila Rana seeking restoration of her assembly seat.
As proceedings started, court asked Rana Asadullah Khan whether he had sought instruction from speaker Rana Iqbal Ahmed or not. The lawyer replied "no", saying he will do it by next date of hearing. The court remarked that the certain questions of law are involved in the case and the court would have to decide them irrespective of speaker's statement.
Shumaila had resigned in July 2009 owing to party pressure after a case of credit card theft. She had submitting that after the registration of the case, a committee was formed by PML-N comprising Senator Pervez Rashid, MNA Pervez Malik, Muhammad Ajmal, Secretary to Chief Minister and Naseem Sadiq, additional secretary law and added PML-N parliamentarians Khawaja Saad Rafique, Zulfiqar Khosa, Raja Ashfaq Sarwar. She said they harassed her for resigning from the seat of MPA and they also sent armed person to her house to pressurise her. Subsequently she had to resign from the assembly, the petitioner added. She therefore prayed to the court to declare the act of the respondent speaker to accept her resignation as illegal and without lawful authority. She also prayed to the court to declare the notification issued by Punjab Election Commission to de-notify her as MPA and the respondents be directed to notify her as MPA.
