Sindh police can perform better if there is no political pressure on it, Fehmida Abbasi, DSP Welfare Sindh Police, said here on Thursday. Earlier the political parties pressurised the departments to hire their nominees against various positions but now the rules have been tightened and better qualified and able persons are being appointed after a strict written and physical test.
Few years back a welfare section was also established in the police department to attend to the problems of police personnel and to provide them with facilities. It has started schools for policemen's children and industrial homes for their wives, daughters, and sisters.
A private NGO, The Citizen Foundation (TCF), had signed an MoU with police department to open schools on police lands with a view to providing quality education to children. At present seven schools are being run by TCF in Karachi. The schools are located in PID Naval Colony, Police Training Centre Saeedabad, Police Lines Garden, Police Station Quaidabad, Police Station Shah Faisal, Police Station Saudabad, and Police Lines Qayyumabad.
They are Kindergarten to Matric schools and are entertaining more than 2000 pupils. TCF gives a 50% concession, scholarships to the deserving students and even free education to the deserving students. The TCF charged Rs 200 to Rs 25 as fee from different students.
Not only the students but the teachers are also from police force. Fifty to sixty percent staff of TCF is woman police personnel. The police welfare department also facilitates jawans to continue their studies by providing them scholarships. An amount of Rs 6,000 per semester has been given to the bright students or even to police jawans.
An industrial home is also being run in the Police Lines Garden for the wives, daughters, and sisters of police personnel. The industrial home is educating the women in seven different courses. The courses of sewing, stitching, knitting, flower making, beautician, Dars-e-Quran, and montessori training are running under the guidance of a police inspector who acts as principal. Recently, welfare department started a new programme of admissions in Cadet Colleges and Aitchison College only for shaheed personnel's children.
