The general elections of 2008 brought renewed hope to the people of Pakistan and reinforced their faith in democracy. The people of Pakistan voted Pakistan People's Party into power and party formed government at the federal level and coalition governments with other political parties at provincial levels.
The political set up was restored and genuine representatives of the people of Pakistan came into power. Since its inception, the government has been trying to restore 1973 Constitution in its original shape and empower the provincial governments accordingly. The government is following the policy of reconciliation, decentralisation and devolution of power from centre to the provinces. In this regard, the government is trying to strengthen the institutions of the state with special emphasis on Judiciary, Political Institution, Parliament and armed forces.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the chairman of Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament is from the opposition political parties and it is also unprecedented that the armed forces budget has been presented in the Parliament.
The northern areas of Pakistan have been given special status of regional autonomy and renamed as 'Gilgit-Baltistan'. The People of Gilgit-Baltistan elect their own legislature and are headed by a governor with Chief Minister as the Chief Executive.
It also goes to the credit of the present government that it has legislated bill named "Aaghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan" empowering the people of Balochistan. The president has tendered public apology to the people of Balochistan for the grievances done to them in the past.
