US national's release in accordance with law, insists Sanaullah

Punjab Law Minister, Rana Sanaullah Khan has said the release of US national Raymond Davis is in accordance with the law but contrary to national sentiments. Talking to reporters outside Punjab Assembly, here on Friday, the minister said they fully respect sentiments and feelings of those lodging protest against the release of Raymond Davis. He further said that the Punjab government was being dragged in the matter unnecessarily.
The minister said that responsibility of release of Raymond Davis lies on heirs of both the Pakistanis who received the amount of 'Diyat'. The Punjab government had not played any role in this matter, he added. Responding to a query regarding arrest of Moonis Elahi by FIA, the minister said the Punjab government has not played any role in this case. However, he asked Moonis to return the plundered money.
Later, talking to a 16-member delegation of students of the Global Institute Lahore at the Punjab Assembly, the minister said it was very important that their political journey for establishment of ideal democratic system should continue without any hindrance to ensure bright future and speedy socio-economic development of the masses.
The minister said, "Although the current democratic set-up cannot be declared a model democratic dispensation, however, in none of the existing advanced democratic countries, ideal democratic conditions were witnessed in the early stages." Had democracy been allowed to continue since the establishment of Pakistan, the neighbouring country India would not have been 50 years ahead of us today, he said. "There is no doubt the target of good governance has not been so far accomplished over the last three years and even today scandals of financial irregularities are often highlighted by the media.
However, the credit for free media and independent judiciary goes to the present democratic set-up, he added. "If there is corruption today, corrupt ministers are also being arrested for the first time in the history of Pakistan. The only way to provide sincere leadership to the country lies in uninterrupted continuity of democratic system and regular holding of free and fair general elections," he opined. The minister said the people should make a pledge to elect only those candidates in the next elections whose reputation was not bad. The Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), who always used to consult his companions in all crucial matters and situations, set the pioneering example of practical democracy through the establishment of Islamic State in Medina.
