No let-up in Karachi killings: death toll tops 39 since last Thursday

Despite presence of President Asif Zardari in Karachi, there was no let-up in the ongoing unrest as some eight persons fell prey to the targeted killings spree on Monday, taking the death toll to 39 since last Thursday.
The law enforcement agencies have so far appeared toothless to bring the city's situation under control as the unabated targeted killings on Monday claimed eight more lives, including the activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP), in separate incidents in various parts of the metropolis.
An activist of ANP was gunned down in the limits of Sharea Faisal police station.
The body of ANP activist, who was identified as Humayun, 24, son of Azhar Wali, was found at Munawar Chowrangi in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Police said the deceased was kidnapped and later on murdered by unidentified armed men, who threw his body at Munawar Chowrangi in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and fled. The victim was the resident of Block 8, Gulistan Jauhar.
Meanwhile, ANP spokesman Qadir Khan has alleged that the law enforcement agencies were patronise the culprits, saying that the deceased, who was injured along with his two fellow workers Kareem and Jaffar during the armed attack at ANP UC office, was kidnapped when the police was shifting him to home from hospital after treatment. However, the Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Sharea Faisal police stations are haggling over the jurisdiction issue hence no case was registered.
Following the incident, tension gripped Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Pehalwan Goth, Rabia City, Kamran Chowrangi and other localities and miscreants torched a passenger bus 11-A (JA-0403).
A youth was shot dead at Khajoor Market in the limits of Kharadar police station. The body of the victim, whose identity was yet to be ascertained, was recovered from Khajoor Market in the limits of Kharadar police station.
Police said the victim, who was in his early 20s, received shots on different parts of the body, adding that the Lyari gangsters might have involved in his murder as the victim appeared to be a Kachi. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for medico legal formalities and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification. Police registered a case against unidentified men on the complaint of State and initiated probe in this connection.
An activist of MQM, who received bullet injuries four days ago at Bohrapir, passed away at CHK on Monday. The victim Mushtaq, 19, son of Zubair, was the resident of Mughal Compound.
Police said the deceased was targeted by unknown armed men at Bohrapir while he was on his way to home after attending the funeral prayers of in-charge of MQM Unit 29. Shops and markets were closed at Ranchore Line, Lea Market, Boulton Market and other areas.
A teenager was shot dead at Shadman Town in the limits of Sharah Noor Jehan police station. The body of the victim, whose identity was yet to be ascertained, was recovered from Sector 14-A of Shadman Town.
Police said the victim, who appeared to be a Bengali speaking, received three bullets on his upper torso and added that the body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification.
Similarly, a bullet-riddled body was recovered from Yaro Goth of Gaddap Town in the precincts of Surjani Town. The victim, who appeared to be a Seraiki speaking, received single bullet on his head. Police said the identity of the victim was yet to be ascertained. They shifted the body to ASH and later moved to Edhi Morgue. A case was registered against unidentified men on the complaint of State. Another body having bullets and torture marks was recovered from Block K, North Nazimabad in the jurisdiction of Sharah Noor Jehan. Police said the identity of the victim, whose hands and legs were tied with a rope, was yet to be ascertained. They added that the victim, who received four bullets, hailed from Hazara. The body was shifted to ASH for post-mortem and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification. No case was registered till filing of this report.
