US stocks rose on Friday, led by gains in energy shares after Japan's biggest earthquake on record hurt the country's oil refining capacity, but trade was choppy as investors tried to weigh the quake's economic impact. US oil refiner shares were among the largest gainers, with Valero Energy Corp up 5.7 percent and Tesoro Corp up 6.9 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 28.38 points, or 0.24 percent, at 12,012.99. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 6.25 points, or 0.48 percent, at 1,301.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 11.63 points, or 0.43 percent, at 2,712.65.
