Asghar Gill elected as LHCBA president

Muhammad Asghar Gill was elected as president Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) for the year 2011 by securing 4172 votes. Gill was a candidate of Professional Group led by Hamid Khan while his rival candidate Rai Bashir was candidate of Friends Alliance backed by Asma Jahangir and federal law minister Babar Awan, who bagged only 2610 votes.
Federal government's law officers were also campaigning for Rai Bashir. Professional Group win the elections after facing three consecutive defeats in the elections of Supreme Court Bar Association, Lahore Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council which created the impression in the Bar that lawyers have rejected Hamid Khan. Mian Jahangir was elected as vice president by defeating his opponents Malik Ijaz Gorcha. Jahangir bagged 3885 votes while Gorcha secure only 1806 votes.
A neck-and-neck contest was seen on secretary seat. Malik Arshad Awan has notched up secretary seat with a margin of 12 votes after securing 2704 votes while his opponent Sardar Akbar Dogar secured 2692 votes, while Mian Azam was elected as finance secretary by obtaining 5447 votes. The turn out of votes remained low as 50 per cent lawyers exercised their right of votes. Out of total 13508 eligible votes only 6739 votes were cast. Tight security arrangements were made on the occasion and no outsider was allowed to enter the court premises.
