Flood 2010 was an unconventional problem, which needed an unconventional solution. The lessons learnt by the unprecedented calamity bring us to the conclusion that floods do not need to be grudged rather they need to be met with better preparedness.
This was consensus of the inaugural session of an International Conference on "Floods 2010: A Dialogue to Transform Devastation to Opportunity" at School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (SCEE), National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) on Wednesday.
The session was presided over by Engineer Muhammad Asghar Rector NUST with Dr Javed Laghari Chairperson Higher Education Commission, as its chief guest. Secretary Irrigation and Power, Government of Punjab, Rab Nawaz delivered the keynote address on the occasion.
The speakers emphasised the problems created by the most devastating floods of the national history and highlighted the windows of opportunity that were available to the nation in the aftermath. It was also stressed that in the face of such calamities we should not look forward to the foreign assistance rather we needed to exploit our own available resources at optimum level and make our best efforts to meet such calamities with more efficient and affective mechanisms.-PR
