Tumour operation: woman patient seems unable to manage eight bottles of blood

'I am scared of undergoing tumour operation' this was stated by Abida Bibi a patient of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital here on Tuesday. Abida Bibi 40, an Orangi Town resident, was admitted six days back to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for tumour operation. A widow, her husband died few years back of blood cancer. She has three sons, eldest, Waqar 16, student of intermediate first year commerce is the only helper and attendant of Abida Bibi.
She earns her living by sewing clothes of local resident ladies. She complained that doctors prescribed medicines, which she had to manage by herself instead of getting from hospital's pharmacy. Her operation is on February 20 (Sunday) but she still doesn't know who her doctor is and who is going to operate her on Sunday.
On the question of operation she explains that she is much scared of it because she had witnessed many operation patients whose operations were having continuous purulent discharge. She was advised to arrange eight bottles of blood for her operation on Sunday. Blood banks provided her with blood on the condition of presenting one donor for each bottle. She had so far managed five bottles of blood instead of eight.
Blood banks are helpless, obviously, where from should they get further blood as it won't grow on trees, so they had made this cruel some rule, Farhat Afandi, Molecular Lab Manager, revealed.Blood banks should relax this rule; no doubt sometimes it becomes problematic for patients as not every patient every time able to manage donors. So this rule should be relaxed instead of a compulsory condition: make it conditional and blood banks should run campaigns to motivate blood donors so that the patients could be freed from providing donors while they are in dire need of getting blood, Farhat Afandi, Molecular Lab Manager concludes.
