The book "Political Dynamics of Sindh 1947-1977" is based on the PhD dissertation of Dr Tanvir Ahmed Tahir who holds Masters degrees in Political Science and Journalism and is also a law graduate. (There are numerous people who pass exams through learning by rote but knowledge remain skin deep.) It is just to indicate that studies in different fields has broadened the vision and his affiliation with the left enabled him to look at things and events objectively and analyse scientifically.
These qualities are fully reflected in his thesis. The book is divided into ten parts, dealing with Politics of Ethnicity, Political awakening in Sindh and Freedom Movement - Rise of ethnicity in the early years of Pakistan - Political development in Sindh 1947-1954, Sindh: Efforts for identity assertion to Sindh under PPP government 1972-77.
It may appear that ethnicity has been given undue importance. It may be partially true. But if one looks at the role the ethnicity factor is playing in national life, both political and social, one may conclude that this subject needs further studies to find ways leading to national integration with proper respect for all the ethnic groups and their social, political and economic rights.
In other chapters the approach has been scientific - there can be of course not scientific approach without objectivity. This approach doesn't allow to justify pre-drawn conclusions. Conclusions should follow the proper appreciation of the facts. Other important factor is neutrality / impartiality. But absolute impartiality is almost an impossibility. One cannot negate / reject his/her mind set.
So, there has to be difference of opinion between the writer and the reader. How much? Depends on their beliefs and world outlook. Same is the case with the book under discussion.
The subject matter is serious and demands seriousness on the part of the reader.
Dr Tahir has provided us good food for thought. The year 1977 and subsequent developments call for such studies. Let us wait for some one to come up with such thought provoking attempt.
