Freedom of bar, judiciary: promises made during lawyer's movement yet to be kept: Asma

President Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jahangir has said that the promises made during lawyer's movement to make bar and judiciary independent are yet to be kept. She said chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has also been reiterating that complete justice is not being done.
Ms Jahangir addressing a press conference here on Thursday briefed media persons about a seminar being held on February 12 (Saturday) with a name "Dispensation of Justice-Challenges ahead." The daylong seminar hosted by SCBA will be held in Lahore at a local hotel wherein CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Punjab chief minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif will be the chief guests.
She told media that the speakers at the seminar will discuss key legal reforms, public interest litigation, protection of rights, weakness and strength of national judicial policy and accountability of lawyers and judges. She further said that lawyer's representatives from all provinces will attend the seminar who will bring their suggestions.
Talking about the judicial policy, she said lawyers kept mixed opinion on the policy but still there was good co-ordination between bar and the bench. She said both lawyers and judges will have to hold self-accountability to keep the integrity of black-coat intact and to dispense justice among the masses respectively. She also condemned incidents of violence among lawyers.
She however, avoided media queries about double murder accused US citizen Raymond Allen Davis and only said, "The bar has no role in the case and we will honour the court decision." SCBA's secretary Qamar Zaman Qureshi, however, said the law should take it course and no favour should be extended to the accused for being US citizen.
