Steadier trend was seen on the currency market on Thursday as the rupee managed to gain versus the US currency despite the higher demand for dollars, dealers said. The rupee almost retained its overnight level against the dollar as it did not show any variation for buying at 85.50, it, however, inched up with a gain of one paisa for selling at 85.54, they said.

Indian rupee was little changed on Thursday after a weak start as mild gains in domestic shares helped steady the market, but the outlook was tepid with high oil prices spurring demand for dollars. At 10:10 am (0440 GMT) the partially convertible rupee was at 45.63/64 per dollar, after easing to 45.65 in early trade and little changed from Wednesday's close of 45.62/63.

According to the moneychangers, there was no visible change in the dollar's demand and supply situation. The dollar commenced trading at overnight closing rates of Rs 85.60 and Rs 85.90 on buying and selling counters, respectively. However, at the end of trading, the dollar showed marginal improvement and was closed at Rs 85.70 on buying side, while selling rate remained intact at Rs 85.90, the moneychangers added.
Likewise, the local currency remained under pressure against the pound sterling and lost 30-paisa on buying counter (Rs 137.80) and 20-paisa on selling counter (Rs 138.50). The pound was traded at Rs 137.80 and Rs 138.50, as compared to overnight closing rates of Rs 137.50 and Rs 138.30, respectively, they added.
The dollar opened at Rs 85.90 (buying) and Rs 86.10 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 85.90 (buying) and Rs 86.10 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 136.30 (buying) and Rs 136.70 (selling) against the previous rate. It did not witness any change in the evening session and closed at Rs 136.30 (buying) and Rs 136.70 (selling).
