A police constable though stabbed grievously by a carjacker on Wednesday shot the culprit dead, and afterwards breathed his last in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in the jurisdiction of Sabzi Mandi Police Station in a failed car lifting attempt in sector I-10/1.
The constable Mukamal Shah failed the attempt of car lifting at the cost of his life, when the thief tried to steal a vehicle from street No 53 in sector I-10/1 around 2:00 am. Upon the local residents woke up and informed Rescue 15 police and also conveyed message at the police picket at CDA Chowk through police control. An official at Sabzi Mandi Police Station said that they were also informed about the physical appearance and dress of the carjacker.
The carjacker tried to avoid police picket, but constable Mukamal Shah (C-4320) stopped him for physical checking, he offered resistance and fled after clinging to a passing by truck, the official said, adding that Shah took motorcycle and chased him.
He said that the car lifter ran towards a closed street in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed after leaving the truck and the policeman succeeded in intercepting him, but the car lifter again offered resistance and injured the constable by attacking him with sharp knife. Injured policeman shot him in forehead at close range that resulted in instant death of the carjacker, the official added.
He further said that Shah contacted his colleague, head constable and informed him that he had received wounds in attempt to arrest car thief but shot him dead. Mukamal Shah could not utter further and his mobile could not respond despite repeated attempts by his colleagues at the picket, the official added. The police started search for the injured colleague and found him in a close street of Khayabna-e-Sir Syed. Shah was brought to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
Meanwhile, the funeral prayer of the Mukamal Shah held at Police Line Headquarters, which was attended by Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Durrani, Deputy Inspector General operations Bani Amin Khan, DIG Headquarters Kamaluddin Tipu, DIG Security Dr Mujeeb ur Rehman, AIGs Ahmed Mukaram, Ehsan Sadiq, Senior Superintendent of Police Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan, SSP Headquarters Zubiar Ahmed Hashmi, SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood and other officials.
Mukamal Shah, resident of Angro Barri Tehsil Tangi, District Charasada, left behind a widow, a son Salman Shah, 4 and a daughter Zainab, 2. He joined Islamabad police in 2001 and was currently residing at House No D-18, Sector IV, Khayaban-e-Sir Syed. His dead body was dispatched to native village.
