Punjab government constitutes special team

Published Updated

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the Punjab government has constituted a special team to probe the Punjab Governor's assassination. While talking to newsmen outside the Punjab Assembly here on Wednesday, he said Nasir Durrani would head the special team.
He was of the view that since the incident had taken place in Islamabad, it would be appropriate that the Islamabad High Court conducts the judicial inquiry. "The Punjab government had written a letter to the Federal Interior Secretary and offered full co-operation to the joint investigation team that is already probing the killing of Salman Taseer," he added.
According to him, it will be too early to comment on the investigation; however, initial investigation shows that the accused had no connection with any militant or banned organisation. However, the accused is being interrogated and more facts will come out.
"The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) plans to visit the deceased's residence to express sympathies with the bereaved family and will also hold a special session on Friday to pay tributes to Punjab Governor," he added. To a question, he said the PML-N never believed in enmity on the basis of political differences and they have on numerous occasions met the deceased Punjab Governor.
When asked about the next Punjab Governor, Rana Sanaullah said this is only the discretion of the President to appoint Governor on the advice of Prime Minister. "However, if the Federal government seeks suggestion from the Punjab Chief Minister, he would definitely advise the names. But again this will not be necessary for the President to accept it," he added.
