The performance of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani presents a very dismal picture of his tenure. His government has miserably failed to control increase in inflation and unemployment, besides deteriorating law and order situation, curb grievances of the people.
The prime minister himself attended the last day of 2-day international conference on climate change held in Islamabad (January 13, 2009) that categorically warned Pakistan on incoming unprecedented devastating flood in the country that also predicted five present decrease in Pakistan's GDP as a result and he himself expressed his concern over such warning.
Nevertheless, despite such warning, the prime minister miserably failed to take pre-emptive measures that resulted ruination in the country. It clearly appears the prime minister lacks far-sightedness and vision and he must be accountable to the nation on this despite having such warning about 19 months ago.
His statement: "Had Kalabagh Dam in place, devastating flood could have been averted" showed his lack of understanding as Kalabagh Dam project was design-wise not flood control project and 6.1 MAF dam had no capacity to store water flood as one spate was about 100 MAF.
The prime minister also failed to provide relief to the people of Sindh, who were worst victim of Musharraf's tenure so much so not a single mega development project was launched to benefit the people of Sindh. The "Water Accord 1991", after passing 19 years, could not be implemented. Consequently, 2.7 million people, who are living downstream Kotri in Sindh, continued to face thirst and hunger. The sixth largest delta in the world Indus delta was on verge of unnatural death, but the prime minister has nothing to do with this as he remained mum.
The prime minister personally may be a noble man, who belongs to a respected family of Multan, but his performances as prime minister showed that he has remained irrelevant about the genuine grievances of the people in general and Sindh in particular. Therefore, I suggest Gilani to resign immediately and he must be replaced with the some suitable person from KP.
