A division bench of Lahore High Court here Monday suspended sentence of former director Capital Development Authority (CDA), Muhammad Junaid Karim and ordered to release him on bail. The bench comprising Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry and Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq passed these orders on the appeal of Karim.
An accountability court at Rawalpindi in October last had awarded 10-year imprisonment to Junaid Karim, Shoukat Abbas and Jaffar Raza. It had also imposed rupees two million fine each on the three men. However, the court acquitted another accused Abdul Salam Baloch from the charges.
The three men were accused of involvement in the embezzlement of funds allocated for improvement of water supply system in sectors G-6 and G-7. According to the reference, the alleged embezzlement was made in 1994 while the inquiry was initiated in 1996. NAB filed a reference in the matter in 2004.
