At least 43 people, including children and several levies personnel, were killed and 72 others wounded on Saturday in a suicide bombing outside a food distribution outlet of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Khar, headquarters of Bajaur Agency.
According to reports pouring in from the tribal belt, a large number of tribesmen were forming a queue in front of the international relief agency at Civil Colony when a girl suicide bomber blew herself up through detonating explosives tied to her body. About 600 to 700 people get rations from the outlet on daily basis.
The personnel of Levies force were carrying out checking of those coming to get ration when the suicide bomber, a teenage girl, reportedly first lobbed hand grenades towards the crowd and later blew herself up with a big explosion. Bajaur Agency borders Mohmand Agency where 11 security personnel and 24 militants were killed on Friday.
Bajaur Agency Headquarters Hospital sources confirmed the arrival of 43 bodies and 72 injured. The condition of several injured was stated to be critical. Those who died in the explosion included Fazal Ahmad, Sultan, Fazal Amin, Fayyaz Mohammad, Wahab Gul, Abdurahim, Shehzad Khan, Imran, Mohammad Gul, Khanzada, Azizullah Khan, Daud, Jehanzeb, Khan Bahadar, Khaista Khan, Rahman Wali, Mohammad Khan, Fazal Jan, Sher Zaman, Khan Mohammad, Lal Mohammad, Roohul Amin, Toor Khan, Khanzada, Azizullah, Javed Iqbal, Mohammad Rauf, Khanzada, Mohammad Zaman, Sher Wali, Gul Haleem, Zakirullah, Mohammad Amin, Said Hassan.
The names of the injured could not be immediately ascertained. Forty-nine injured were reportedly shifted to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Peshawar. Majority of those died and injured in the incident were old men and teenagers. After explosion, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the Bajaur bomb blast and said that the nation is united against the terrorists, and battle against them would continue till the achievement of the target.
The prime minister said that militants involved in bomb explosions are on the verge of defeat as the brave nation of Pakistan is united against them. He directed for provision of all possible and better treatment to those injured in the explosion. He said that those killing innocent people neither have importance for humanity nor believe in any religion.
Iftikhar Hussein, spokesman of KP government also condemned the bombing. Talking to media here at Qayyum Sports Stadium, he said that such cowardly acts of the terrorists would not deterred the govt from the battle against terrorism and war would continue till the elimination of last terrorist.
