Exxon Baton Rouge refinery CDU, coker may restart next week

08 Nov, 2017

A 32,000 bpd coking unit at the refinery, shut on Tuesday, may restart over the weekend, the sources said.

The CDU was taken out of production after a fire heavily damaged the 75,000-bpd reformer on Nov. 1, the sources said. The unit is the largest of four at the refinery that do the primary refining of crude oil and provide hydrocarbon feedstock for all other units.

The crude unit was to be brought back on-line later on Nov. 1, but instead was kept down for planned work.

The coker shutdown was also planned, the sources said. Cokers convert residual crude oil into either feedstock for motor fuels or petroleum coke, a substitute for coal.

The reformer remains shut at the refinery.
