Indian police merciless assault protesters, mediamen in Srinagar

Published Updated

Hundreds of youth took to the streets to protest against the atrocities and arrest of youth. They were subjected to brute force by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and policemen at Saraf Kadal in Srinagar, KMS reported.

Later, the protests spread to other areas including Bohri Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Nowhatta, Naid Kadal and Batmaloo.

The police and CRPF men deployed in the areas also fired teargas shells, slingshots and pelted stones to quell the protestors, an eyewitness said.

A photojournalist was detained while three other journalists were assaulted by the police when they were covering the protests at Saraf Kadal after the Friday prayers.

He was bundled into a police vehicle and taken to an unknown destination. The other press photographers had a close shave as they were chased and some of them were beaten up by the police and CRPF. The police also arrested over 40 persons from Saraf Kadal, Gojwara, Braine and other areas of Srinagar city.
