"She was taken (to hospital) for medical checks. The results are not yet known," the official, Ihor Andrushko, told Reuters. President Viktor Yanukovich promised on Tuesday to provide hospital treatment for his political opponent, who was sentenced last month to seven years' imprisonment for abuse of office, after a human rights monitor expressed alarm at her condition. Tymoshenko, who was beaten narrowly by Yanukovich in a run-off for the presidency in February 2010, says her trial is a vendetta by him aimed at neutralising her as a political force in the country. The European Union, with which the ex-Soviet republic is trying to forge closer political and trade ties, has largely taken her side, saying that her trial was politically motivated and calling for her release.
