The Ibovespa, the Sao Paulo market's main index, opened at 56,395 points, down from Monday's close of 58,338 points, the exchange said.
The Brazilian real traded at 1.7575 to the dollar Tuesday, down 3.56 percent from Monday's close of 1.6926 to the dollar.
