PPP core committee discusses law and order and economic situation in country
The meeting that was also attended by the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was participated by Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Leader of the House in Senate, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Commerce Minister, Ch. Ahmed Mukhatar, Federal Minister for Defence, Senator A. Rehman Malik, Federal Minister for Interior, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination, Senator Dr. Zaheeruddin Babar Awan, Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Syed Naveed Qamar, Federal Minister for Privatization, Syed Khursheed Shah, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Minister for Textile Industries, Senator Jahangir Badar, Senator Faisal Raza Abidi, Mr. Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Mr. Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ms. Rukhsana Bangash, Ms. Fouzia Habib and Spokesperson to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar.
Spokesperson Farhatullah Babr said that the meeting discussed in depth the current political situation obtaining in the country with particular reference to coalition politics, the recent political developments and the emerging scenario likely to unfold in the future.
The President and the Prime Minister also briefed the meeting on the talks separately with Senator John Kerry Chairman US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday over the Raymond Davis issue.
The President informed the Committee that he had impressed upon John Kerry that the Davis issue was a complex one with several dimensions that needed to be taken into consideration by both sides. He said that he had informed John Kerry that there was an urgent and great need to proceed with caution showing respect to the sensibilities of all concerned. He said that he had also informed the visiting US leader that the matter was before the court which had already ruled that it will decide the issue of immunity to Davis.
The Prime Minister briefing the Core Committee members about his meeting with John Kerry said that he had also suggested to Kerry that the US needed to take into account the ground reality and recognize that the principal stakeholders in the Davis case were the family members of those killed and the people of Pakistan.
The meeting reaffirmed to uphold the principle of sovereign equality. It also reiterated the Party and the government position that the strategic partnership and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries should not be allowed to be sacrificed by making them hostage to one single incident.
Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting also reviewed the Party relations with coalition partners in the government and issues relating to and arising out of the expansion in the cabinet. Interior Minister Rahman Malik gave a briefing on law and order situation while the Law Minister Dr Babar Awan gave a briefing on current legal issues.
The meeting reviewed the emerging political challenges from different sources and resolved to face them with steely determination. The meeting also expressed full confidence in the leadership of President Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
