Australia merchandise imports down 2pc in Sept

The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday said imports of fuel fell 12 percent, or A$374 million, in the month to more than reverse the rise seen in August.

Imports of processed industrial supplies fell 15 percent or A$356 million, while imports of consumption goods eased 3 percent, or A$155 million. Imports of capital goods climbed 5 percent, or A$226 million, in a positive sign for business investment.

In original terms, imports fell 2 percent to A$20.0 billion, while on a balance of payments basis they also dropped by 2 percent.
