Retief Goosen underlined his status as a 'Big Five' golfer with a scintillating six-shot victory over US Open champion Michael Campbell in the Volkswagen Masters-China Tournament on Sunday.
Turning at seven-under, the double Major-winner finished with a magnificent eight-under-par 64, matching the course record he set in the first round of the 300,000-dollar Asian Tour event at Jinghua Golf Club.
The wire-to-wire victory was the world number five's 23rd international win and second of the year after the US PGA International just four weeks ago. His first title in five visits to Asia earned him 48,450 dollars in prize money.
Campbell, who trailed the South African by just one shot going into the final day, could only muster a 69 in hot and sunny conditions at the par-72 course.
Chinese star Zhang Lian Wei eagled a bunker-shot on the 12th to finish third at 11-under, overtaking David Bransdon of Australia who was one over for the day and finished fourth.
Two more Australians, Adam Blyth and Gary Simpson, finished at nine-under for a share of fifth, two shots ahead of American Gary Rusnak and Lu Wen Teh of Taiwan.
Goosen, who shot a 67 in round two but could only manage a 71 on Saturday, drained a 15-footer at the second to kick off a five-hole birdie run, with a good up-and-down on the third, another putt from 15 feet on the fourth, a tee shot to within five feet on the par-three fifth and a good shot out of the rough on six.
He saved par after driving among the bunkers on the par-five seventh where Campbell, after missing a 50-foot eagle chance, gained his first shot of the day.
However the Kiwi, who missed makeable birdie putts on four and nine, could not match Goosen's iron play either and watched as the South African dispatched two more birdie chances on the eighth and ninth to open up a seven-shot lead.
Goosen edged a 50-foot eagle putt on 12 where he matched Campbell's birdie before a water-shot on the par-four 15th threatened to blemish a hitherto impeccable round.
But incredibly, the double US Open champion downed his waterside drop-shot from 25 yards to save par.
An approach shot to within four feet yielded another birdie at 16 before Campbell shone with a tee-shot which finished inches short of the cup on the par-three 17th for his third birdie of the day.
However, with a new course record beckoning, Goosen showed he was human by bogeying the last in front of hundreds of fans at the 18th green.
Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Thaworn Wiratchant finished seven under par for a share of ninth while defending champion Rahil Gangjee was way back in 38th.
Former Ryder Cup star Philip Price carded a final-day 69 to take a share of 24th.
The Volkswagen Masters-China was the first event of the second half of this year's Asian Tour with another 14 tournaments scheduled before the end of the year.
