LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Saturday urged the Punjab government to withdraw the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess (PIDC) in the interest of trade and industry of the province.

LCCI President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad, in a statement, termed the cess a sort of double taxation. It was an indirect tax as it would be charged on movement of goods, including raw materials cleared on dry ports of Punjab, which he claimed, would impede the economic growth in the province. He expessed the apprehension that after the imposition of Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess, the businessmen might start clearing their imported consignments in other provinces to avoid this tax. This would not only hurt businesses of clearing agents and transport companies that provide employment to thousands but also affect the provincial exchequer, he added.

The LCCI President said the businessmen of Punjab were trying to

play their role for the progress and prosperity of the country and theyed need a helping hand from the Punjab government.

Sheikh Arshad urged the Chief Minister to look into the matter personally and withdraw the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess.
