"Australia condemns the brutal bomb attack on the United Nations building in Abuja, Nigeria last night which has killed and injured many innocent civilians," Prime Minister Julia Gillard said.

"The United Nations is dedicated to preventing conflict, maintaining peace and helping the world's poorest and most disadvantaged. An attack on the United Nations is an attack on us all."

The UN said while the compound in the Nigerian capital was well defended, a suicide bomber had been able to get past two guarded gates before setting off explosives.

A spokesman claiming to be from the Nigerian rebels group known as Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a deadly attack.
