Speaking at '7th Achievement Award Ceremony 2011' of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) at Expo Centre here Saturday, he said that the government has asked the Indian government to honour water accords with Pakistan.

Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khosa, Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, and Commerce Minister Ameen Faheem were also present on the occasion.

The Prime Minister said that the government was aware of its responsibility to overcome energy crisis in the country.

He said that country's economy had been adversely hit by the energy crisis, adding the decisions by the previous regimes had contributed a great deal to the unprecedented energy shortfall in the country.

"Construction of new dams and import of electricity in order to fulfil the energy needs of the country are the priorities of the government", he added.

Gilani said a committee comprising federal ministers of Finance, Water and Power, Petroleum and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission would submit its report to the federal cabinet soon after Eidul Fitr and committee's recommendations would bring relief to the masses.

The Prime Minister said that his government is striving to devise such a system which would help ease people's problems, saying that the government was working to formulate a modern taxation system in the country.

Lauding the achievements of the business community during the past years despite being faced with international economic crisis, devastating floods and terrorism, Gilani said that our economy had maintained unprecedented stability due to the efforts of the businessmen.

Counting his government's achievements, the Prime Minister said that exceeding of overall exports of the country to 25 billion dollars is a true manifestation of the success of the PPP government on the economic front during the past year.

He said that the government has not borrowed anything from the State Bank during the first month of the new fiscal year 2011-12, adding that economic situation has improved a great deal and there has been significant raise in exports, tax collections during the month of July 2011-12.

Prime Minister Gilani lauded LCCI self-help initiatives on Sheikhupura Dry Port Trust, adding that the government wouldextend full cooperation to LCCI and he would also direct the Pakistan Railways' authorities to provide all out help in this regard.
