Fruit prices continue to rise despite adequate supply

ISLAMABAD : Prices of fruits in the open market, continued to increase despite adequate supply in the whole sale market.

The retailers are seen minting money by overcharging the consumers in open market due to lack of proper system for check on the prices.

It seems that authorities concerned are not taking action against the shopkeepers for overcharging or poor quality fruits.

Retailers claimed that they increased the prices as rates at whole-sale market had gone up.

When contacted, President of Islamabad Fruit Market Traders Welfare Association (FMTWA) Syed Siraj Agha said that the supply of seasonal fruits have increased in the local whole-sale market of fruit and vegetable.

He informed that today grapes were being sold at Rs800 per crate in whole sale market whereas retailers were charging Rs200 per kg.

Agha said that during recent days, fruits supply was on its peak, and added this was not their responsibility to control prices in open market. It was rather responsibility of Islamabad District Administration, he added.

He said that district administration needs to adopt special mechanism to control the prices at open market.
