Traders said it's a "risk-off" day with the US negotiations to raise the debt ceiling still at a deadlock. An unexpected fall in US durable goods orders also added to the uncertainty.
The euro, which typically struggles when there is heightened risk aversion, fell as low as $1.44213 and was last at $1.44320, down 0.6 percent on the day.
