Qaim highlights accountants' role for good governance
He was speaking as chief guest at the Golden Jubilee Conference of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (lCAP) here.
The theme of the moot was "Accountants and Social Responsibility" .
Syed Qaim Ali Shah opined that the wealth of any nation could rightly be judged through the potential of its professionals and the strength of its institutions.
He called upon the people to stand united in order to face the current difficulties and challenges of terrorism being faced by the country.
He said "today we are passing through difficult times, that is the result of decades of bad governance, from repeated disruptions in political and democratic process".
The Chief Minister said that the PPP leadership through its policy of reconciliation had tried to develop national consensus on certain fundamentals and "we are continuously striving to achieve this objective".
He added that there was a need of support of technocrats and professionals in the process of national consensus especially on some fundamental values such as upholding democratic principles, good governance, rule of law and improving the condition of large majority of poorer sections of the country.
Qaim Ali Shah said that most of the problems of law and order, crime and restlessness in the society were caused by poverty, deprivation and illiteracy.
He said that the government realized its responsibility and was fully committed to improving the lot of people, education and health of vast majority of poorer sections of the country.
The Chief Minister urged the private sector entities to come forward and spend a significant portion of their earning for the well-being of the people, recognizing their social responsibilities.
On the occasion he warmly welcomed the delegates from the SAARC countries and congratulated the office-bearers and members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (lCAP) for organizing Golden Jubilee Conference.
He said that ICAP had been upholding the standards and principles of integrity of accountability and transparency for the past five decades, which were the hallmark of good governance.
Earlier, President of lCAP Saqib Masood in his welcome address highlighted the efforts of the institute during 50-years of its existence.
Besides, Profr Atta-ur-Rehman and Javed Jabbar, a former federal minister, addressed the conference and highlighted the role of education in the process of development, progress and prosperity of the nation.
