Fehmida arrives in New Delhi

NEW DELHI : Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza arrived here on Thursday to attend the Fifth Conference

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the three-day conference, scheduled to be held from July 9-11.

Dr Fehmida Mirza, the first woman speaker of Islamic world, is leading a six-member delegation, comprising Tasneem Siddiqui, Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Kashmala Tariq along with Mahmood Hyat Khan, Tariq Shabbir and Karamat Niyazi.

Talking to reporters on her arrival, Dr Fehmida Mirza said that the parliamentarians must go beyond state level dialogue and help foster close relations between the people of two countries.

She was optimistic about the outcome of discussions and deliberations on issues related to South Asia such as consolidating democracy, strengthening trust between Parliament and people, and sustainable development in SAARC countries.

Earlier, she was received at Indra Gandhi International Airport by Shahid Malik, High Commissioner for Pakistan to India.
