The benchmark Hang Seng Index shed 230.40 points to close at 22,517.55 on turnover of HK$97.68 billion ($12.55 billion).

Shanghai fell 0.21 percent, with the composite index, which covers both A and B shares, down 5.88 points at 2,810.48 on turnover of 122.1 billion yuan ($18.9 billion).
