The GRES-1 unit's operations were not affected, an emergencies ministry official told the news agency, while giving no immediate explanation for the blaze.

"Five people have been delivered in extremely serious condition to the burn unit in Surgut," local emergencies ministry spokesman Vadim Grebennikov said.

The fire was put out about an hour after it started, the official added.

The unit can produce up to 3,280 MW of electricity, according to the company's website.
