41 profiteers sent to jail

KARACHI: As many as 255 shopkeepers were challaned and a fine of Rs 500,000 were imposed for overcharging in violation to the official price list of essential commodities while 41 profiteers were sent to jail.

Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi said that an operation against profiteering is underway in the city by the Karachi divisional and district administrations, said a statement on Tuesday.

The action against profiteers were taken in different areas including Saddar, Civil Line, Garden, Site, Baldia, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi, Bin Qasim, Ibrahim Haidery, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Model Colony.

Total 40 milk sellers, eight meat merchants, six daily commodities grocers, 61 fruit vendors, 96 vegetable merchants, 43 chicken sellers and one flour seller were challaned for violating price list.

The Commissioner has also assigned duties to the administrative officers at the time of auction of fruits and vegetables to check and control the artificial shortage so as to provide relief to the masses.

The Commissioner said that the crackdown against profiteers will continue, till the sale of essential items is not ensured in accordance with the price list.
