109 profiteers challaned: 5 shopkeepers arrested

KARACHI: Five shopkeepers were arrested and sent to jail during the crackdown launched in Karachi to check the illegal profiteering, and violation of the notified price list of essential commodities, said Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi.

He said that the operation against profiteering is underway in the city by the Karachi divisional and districts administrations, said a statement on Tuesday.

The Commissioner said that an amount of Rs 282,000 were also recovered in term of penalties imposed on the profiteers, illegal hoarders, and violators of price list while over 109 shopkeepers have also been challaned during the crackdown.

The actions against profiteers were taken in different areas including Garden, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar Hijri, Site, Orangi, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Airport, Model Coloney and Aram Bagh,

Total 46 milk sellers, one fruits vendor, four vegetable merchants, 23 food items grocers, 18 chicken sellers and 17 flour sellers were challaned for violating price list.

The Commissioner Karachi has also assigned duties to the administrative officers at the time of auction of fruits and vegetables to check and control the artificial shortage of fruits and vegetables so as to provide relief to the masses.

The Commissioner Karachi said that the crackdown against profiteers will continue, till the time the sale of essential items is not ensured in accordance with the price list.
