Copa and American Airlines cancelled flights into the Uruguayan capital after authorities said they expected ash from the volcano across South America's southern cone to be in Uruguay's air space around 0600 GMT Monday, officials at Jose Carrasco International Airport said.

Ash spewed by the volcano on Thursday and Friday forced cancellation of international flights from airports in Argentina and Uruguay.

Tens of thousands of travellers were also left stranded Monday after ash from Chile's volcanic eruptions prompted Australian airlines to ground some domestic services and flights to New Zealand.

The volcano, which rumbled to life on June 4 for the first time since 1960, is high in the Andes mountains, 870 kilometres (540 miles) south of the Chilean capital Santiago, near the border with Argentina.

Meanwhile Chilean volcano monitors said on Sunday that Puyehue had decreased its activity.
