Taiwan president kicks off re-election campaign

TAIPEI : Taiwan 's President Ma Ying-jeou on Sunday launched his campaign for re-election in January presidential polls

Ma came to power in 2008 on a platform of wiping out corruption, ending the eight-year rule of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led by then president Chen Shui-bian.

Chen is currently serving a 17-year jail term in a prison in northern Taiwan for two convictions of bribery, and in April parliament passed a bill paving the way to setting up an anti-corruption commission.

Ma, also the leader of the ruling Kuomintang party, is standing for a second and final four-year term, and said the vote would decide the fate of the measures taken so far.
