Sindh to conduct fresh survey of factories and industrial units

KARACHI: Sindh government has decided to conduct a fresh survey of factories functional in the province and ascertain their status vis-a-vis implementation of health and safety of their workers.

Sindh Secretary for Labour Noor Muhammad Leghari told Country Director of ILO, Francesco D'Ovido in a meeting to review implementation of rules and regulations related to workplace safety and protection of workers.

He said all newly established factories as well as those functional for years would be covered under the proposed survey and this would be complimented by assessment of the capacities of these units and their workers.

Lagahri reiterated that the government was committed to ensure health safety and protection of factory workers and those associated with different industrial units in the province.

The meeting among others was also attended by President, Employees Federation of Pakistan, Khawaja Nauman, Pakistan Workers Federation's regional General Secretary, Qazi Tanveer Ahmed and representatives of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research Labour, Director of SESSI, Occupational Safety and Health Consultant.

The meeting following extensive deliberations decided to prepare a final draft of the professional health and safety of the workers at the work places in a month, which would be dispatched to the provincial cabinet for approval.

The participants of the meeting agreed to explore means for meeting the funds requirement for the implementation of the joint action plan.

Joint Director (Labour) Syed Ali Ashraf Naqvi was nominated as the focal person in acknowledgment of services he had rendered for successful implementation of joint action plan.

Sindh Secretary for Labour directed officials of Sindh Labour Directorate to regularly visit all relevant industrial units and monitor measures adopted for protection of workers against any casualty or work related risks.

He also sought action against the factories found to ignore or lacking in implementation of the approved criterion for the professional health and safety of the workers.
