The children, aged between six and 14, were killed in the landslide that also left their mother seriously injured, Ardouin Zephyrin, a spokesman for the Haitian Civil Protection Agency, told AFP.

Heavy rains have lasted a week across Haiti, flooding neighborhoods in the north and washing away tents in the capital Port-au-Prince where survivors of last year's earthquake still live in makeshift shelters.

President Michel Martelly has urged people living in high risk areas, such as mountainous or hilly parts of urban areas, to be on alert for the signs of more landslides, his office said.

The hurricane season that begins in June and lasts until November is expected to be "active" this year, Haitian authorities have warned.
