Singh flew in from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa where he attended a trade summit and offered a raft of measures, including $5 billion (3.6 billion euros) in credit lines, to boost his country's presence on the continent, where China has a serious head start.
India is one of Tanzania's main trading partners and has investments worth $1.3 billion (915 million euros) in the east African state.
Singh's official programme in Dar es Salaam starts Friday.
The Indian premier was met at the airport by his host president Jakaya Kikwete. He received a 19-gun salute before inspecting a guard of honour and viewing traditional dances.
