At 2100 GMT the euro was down to $1.4083 from $1.4100 late Tuesday.

The dollar moved slightly higher as well against the Japanese currency, to 81.97 yen from 81.91 yen.

"There's an underlying weakness that still remains in the euro as Greece doesn't seem to have been resolved," said Mary Nicola of BNP Paribas.

However, she added, "There is no real news" in the market.

"So far the euro has been driven by headlines. It seems that no news is good news" for the dollar, she said.

"The dollar and the yen are stronger today (against the euro) as concerns over the Greek debt crisis increase along with worries over the extent of economic slowdown in the global economy," said Derek Halpenny, European head of currency research at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

The dollar fell to 0.8727 Swiss francs (0.8801). The British pound climbed to $1.6272 ($1.6174).
