SAN SALVADOR: El Salvador will hold presidential elections on February 2 of next year, the country's electoral tribunal said Monday.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal signed a decree formalizing the date of polls which will elect a president and vice-president to a five-year term.

Under Salvadoran law, if no candidate obtains half plus one of the votes in the contest, a second round of voting will take place in April between the two leading candidates.
