RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue is coordinating with National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) and Wafaqi Mohtasib to assist investigating agencies in probing the cases of tax fraud/evasion, disciplinary proceedings and share details of cases involving technical interpretation with huge revenue implications.

Sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday that the FBR is facing multiple challenges on legal front like pending litigations in service matters apart from the complex technical issues involving different appellate fora in the field of Income Tax, Sales Tax, Federal Excise and Customs. Similarly, tax authorities have to coordinate with many agencies even with different Ministries regarding involvement of the officials in tax evasion, tax fraud, disciplinary proceedings and submission of details in cases involving technical interpretation having huge revenue implications.

It depends on the nature of data required by the investigating agency for carrying out investigation. It was felt that a Legal Consultant was required to be appointed by FBR having firsthand knowledge of all taxes administered by FBR and experience in dealing with services matters.

It was unanimously decided during the last Board-Council meeting of the FBR that Legal Consultant be hired after completing all the codal formalities and procedures as prescribed by the government in such cases through a competitive process.
