The sight-seeing train was near Mount Ali when four carriages were hit by the falling tree trunk, hurting passengers on board, said an official at Chiayi county fire department.
Many of the passengers were believed to be tourists from China but it was not immediately clear if Chinese were among the killed and injured, the official said.
The wounded were rushed down the mountain to nearby hospitals for treatment, he said.
