ISLAMABAD: Jailed PTI founder Imran Khan met his lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar at Adiala jail on Monday and discussed various matters with them.
Talking to reporters, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan welcomed the meeting, describing it as a positive development after a prolonged suspension of access to the party founder.
He said denying an incarcerated person access to family members for 15 days amounted to a human rights violation. He said Safdar’s meeting was the first with Khan since April 8.
He said the suspension of meetings had fuelled political tensions, adding that regular access to Khan could have helped defuse the situation and averted governor’s rule and emergency in KP.
He said Safdar had returned without any significant political message from Khan, as their discussion of political developments had been brief.
Gohar said he had repeatedly sought meetings with Khan involving party leaders, including himself and PTI-backed opposition leader in Senate Raja Nasir Abbas. After those efforts failed, he added, he arranged the meeting with Khan through Safdar.
He also dismissed speculation about the formation of a forward bloc within the PTI parliamentary party in KP, insisting that all provincial lawmakers remained loyal to Khan. Any decision on the matter, he said, rested with Khan.
Gohar renewed the demand for proper medical treatment for Khan and access to his personal physicians.
He said no discussion had taken place about transferring the former premier to Bani Gala or Islamabad jail.
Expressing concern over the imprisonment of Khan’s three sisters, he said non-political family members should not be dragged into political disputes, alleging that political victimisation was at its peak.
