ISLAMABAD: Agricultural experts said Saturday that the government’s decision to fix an indicative support price of Rs4,500 per maund for the 2027 wheat crop, up Rs1,000 from Rs3,500 last year, would encourage farmers to expand cultivation and strengthen national food security.

Speaking at a media interaction, experts said the higher price would help growers offset rising input costs and inflationary pressures, improve returns and incentivise increased wheat production.

Khan Faraz, former secretary of the Pakistan Tobacco Board, said a reasonable support price was essential to encourage farmers to bring more land under wheat cultivation, boost domestic output and support rural economies.

He added that major farmer organisations had welcomed the decision, terming it a positive step towards ensuring fair returns for growers and strengthening food security, Khan Faraz added.
