ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has extended the term of Constitutional Benches of the Sindh High Court for one more year.

The Commission also confirmed that senior advocate Ahsan Bhoon’s LLB degree is genuine. The JCP meeting was held on Tuesday with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi in the chair.

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah attended the meeting, representing Parliament as members of treasury benches in the National Assembly and Senate respectively.

Bilawal has replaced Senator Farooq H Naek and Sanaullah has substituted PML-N MNA Sheikh Aftab Ahmed. They had resigned as the members of the JCP last week.

According the statement, issued by the Supreme Court’s PRO, “All the existing judges of the SHC Constitutional Benches were re-nominated as judges of the constitutional benches and the term of the Constitutional Benches was extended for one year by majority of 14 to 1.” The current tenure of the Sindh High Court constitutional benches is scheduled to expire on October 25.

The constitutional benches in the apex court and the High Courts were created following the enactment of 26th Constitutional Amendment. The JCP under Article 175-A of the Constitution is also mandated to appoint judges of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), Supreme Court, High Courts and Federal Shariat Court. It also evaluates the performance of the High Courts’ judges.

The JCP Secretary placed before the Commission a complaint of Capt. (R) Muhammad Safdar Awan, against Ahsan Bhoon regarding “Urgent Verification and inquiry into the Educational Qualifications, Enrollment and Professional Credentials of Ahsan Bhoon, Member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan”.

The Secretary informed the Commission “that the said complaint was referred to the Secretary Pakistan Bar Council for comments who had replied that the degree of Ahsan Bhoon, Advocate as returned candidate, was verified twice by Returning Officer (Attorney General for Pakistan) for elections to Pakistan Bar Council first in year 2021 and then in year 2026 and on both the occasions the University of Punjab verified the degree as genuine.”
