On World Standards Day, EBM reflects on the discipline that sustains quality and shapes responsible manufacturing.

A familiar biscuit pack carries an expectation. Consumers expect the same taste, the same quality and the same care each time they open it. For a food manufacturer, meeting that expectation consistently is a responsibility that extends across every stage of production, long before a product reaches the shelf.

For six decades, English Biscuits Manufacturers (EBM) has built its relationship with Pakistani consumers through products that have become part of everyday life. Sustaining that relationship requires more than familiarity. It requires dependable processes, clear accountability and a continuing commitment to the standards behind every pack.

World Standards Day is an opportunity to recognise the role these systems play in earning and maintaining consumer confidence. In food manufacturing, standards guide how ingredients are handled, how production is managed and how the finished product is assessed. They provide a framework for identifying risks, reviewing performance and making improvements that can be sustained as a business grows.

At EBM, internationally recognised management systems underpin this approach. Its quality and food safety frameworks include ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000, supported by systems for environmental management and occupational health and safety. Together, they bring structure to responsibilities that must be fulfilled every day, across teams and facilities.

Their value lies in how they are applied. Regular monitoring, internal reviews and independent audits help translate policies into consistent practice. For consumers, much of this work remains out of sight. Its significance is reflected in the confidence with which they choose a product and return to it.

For a food manufacturer, the responsibility to nourish people also involves caring for the resources on which food production depends. At EBM, this understanding informs its Nourish the World commitment, connecting the quality of its products with greater care in the use of water, energy and materials. Standards give that commitment a practical foundation, helping the company monitor performance and build improvements into everyday operations.

This commitment also extends to EBM’s support for collective climate action, bringing businesses and other stakeholders together to encourage more sustainable practices. Collaboration between industry and government can help strengthen the food systems on which manufacturers and consumers depend, supporting the continued availability of affordable, quality food.

For Pakistan’s manufacturing sector, the wider relevance of standards is clear. Consistent quality supports consumer confidence, while better resource management helps businesses operate more efficiently. Both contribute to the strength and credibility of locally manufactured products.

For EBM, World Standards Day brings these responsibilities into focus. The trust built over generations depends on the work carried out today: maintaining quality, reviewing processes and improving how products are made. That continuing discipline is what gives an everyday promise its substance.
