PESHAWAR: Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Workers) has “rejected” the imposition of governor’s rule and declaration of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the move as “a serious blow to democracy and democratic institutions”.

In a joint statement, PFUJ (Workers) President Shamim Shahid and Secretary-General Raja Riaz condemned the alleged suspension of “the human, political, and social rights of more than 40 million people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the pretext of an emergency”.

They described the move as an attempt to impose authoritarian rule.

They said that suppressing political opponents by “strangling democratic values” was unbecoming of a political system and political parties.

The PFUJ (Workers) leaders alleged that this move had pushed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, already suffering from terrorism and economic hardship, even further away from development and prosperity.
